Human Bodies are Made for Movement!

Movement is the next subject in our series on self-care areas to increase your health. Humans are made to move, and study after study shows that even modest increases in movement can yield wonderful health results.
One study* involving 22,000 participants showed clear associations of increased activity with lower risks of various chronic illnesses. Higher step counts equated with lower levels of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Frequent and vigorous activity lowered the estimated risks for morbid obesity, obstructive sleep apneas, and major depressive disorder. Other studies have demonstrated many additional health benefits.
Two Easy Changes to Increase Movement This Month
Walking is one of the most overlooked, underrated health-builders! Relaxing and contracting leg muscles directly benefits the lymph and circulation systems.
1. Add 10 minutes of walking per day. If all you can do is 2 minutes, slowly work up to longer times. If you have balance issues, march in place while holding a chair or do chair exercises - lifting one leg a little and strike the foot gently on the floor, then repeat with the other leg to mimic walking.
2. Aim to move 2 to 5 minutes every hour. Set an alarm to remind you to move around every hour, avoiding the few hours before bedtime. Walk some stairs, dance, repeatedly stand up and sit in a chair, or follow a movement video online (mobility, yoga, tai chi, or dance).
