Nutrition: Providing the Right Fuel for Your Body

Good nutrition is a foundation of any self-care regimen and is one of the five pillars of health. Food's primary purpose is nutrition—that is, to supply the body with the nutrients it needs to grow, repair itself, and function properly.
Everything you eat or drink either nourishes your body and supports your health, does nothing, or places an unnecessary demand on your body that can harm your health.
Getting the right amounts of vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber is vitally important to energy levels, mental clarity, and well-being. Yet people’s diets these days tend to be imbalanced, with too much of a few things (especially sugar—a carbohydrate) and not enough of the others!
Two Smart Moves to Increase Nutritional Value This Month
1. Swap out sugary drinks
Excess sugar in coffee, soft drinks, and fruit juices can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, placing an undue burden on your body.
Alternatives:
Unsweetened sparkling water (plain or flavored)
Naturally sweet tea - rooibos, hibiscus, peppermint, or jasmine
Diluted fruit juice (3 or 4 parts water to 1 part juice)
2. Choose the “better than” choice
Perfection can be the enemy of a better diet! Slowly work your way toward an overall better diet by swapping out the worst offenders, one at a time, with substitutes that taste good but are healthier. For example, instead of chips, try air-popped popcorn or (even better) roasted pumpkin seeds.
Sometimes it’s hard figuring out the best fuel for our bodies.
